Proses ini mencakup pembuatan desain dan gambar baku. Proses ini dilakukan Peruri dengan dipandu BI (Bank Indonesia). Adapun bahan kertas uang dan logam disediakan oleh pihak BI. Proses ini akan mengukir pelat pencetak uang yang dijadikan sebagai dasar untuk mencetak uang.

Butuh waktu tiga-lima bulan untuk membuat plat cetak uang ini. Namun seiring dengan majunya teknologi, kini proses engraving dapat dibantu dengan teknik komputer.
2.Pemberian tinta

Setelah pelat selesai diukir, kini tahap kedua dimulai, proses roll sablon intaglio. Proses ini adalah proses pemberian tinta ke roll mesin penggulung untuk mencetak uang.

3.Tahap cetak warna dasar
Tahap ketiga adalah offset printing, yaitu tahap cetak rata. Setelah plat dan roll pencetak uang sudah siap, maka dimulailah tahap pencetakan uang kertas.

Satu kertas lebar bisa memuat 45-50 lembar uang. Ini merupakan tahap pemberian warna dasar uang. Setelah diberi warna dasar, kertas harus dikeringkan selama satu hari.

4.Tahap cetak dalam
Tahap keempat adalah proses intaglio, tahap cetak dalam. Setelah kertas diberi warna dasar, kini dilanjutkan dengan pencetakan kertas di bagian dalam dan lembar sebaliknya.

Proses teknik ini menggunakan prinsip penggoresan gambar ke atas permukaan. Proses cetak dilakukan secara bertahap, dimulai dari bagian belakang dan berlanjut ke bagian depan.
5. Pemeriksaan

Tahap kelima adalah proses pemeriksaan lembar besar. Setelah dua bagian permukaan uang dicetak, dilakukanlah pemeriksaan uang.
Pemeriksaan ini dilakukan secara manual oleh karyawan untuk melihat apakah ada kerusakan dalam proses produksi. Bila ada yang rusak atau cacat, maka pada lembaran rusak itu akan ditandai dengan coretan.
6.Cetak nomor seri
Tahap keenam adalah proses cetak nomor seri. Nomor seri uang akan disesuaikan dengan pesanan Bank Indonesia.

Terdapat tiga mesin putar pencetak nomor yang telah diisi plat nomor masing-masing uang. Setelah pencetakan nomor, maka uang kertas harus diperiksa kembali.

7.Penyelesaian (finishing)
Tahap ketujuh adalah proses penyelesaian. Tahap akhir ini dibagi menjadi dua, secara mekanis dan manual. Secara mekanis, kertas lembar tersebut dipotong menggunakan mesin.
Setelah itu, lembaran uang kini diperiksa lagi oleh sejumlah karyawan yang mayoritas perempuan.
